What is RESCUEPARTY.ORG?

Rescue Party is a community of people who want to see New Orleans and all of the areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina repaired. The Rescue Party community will be working in a number of areas to assist those repairs including:

Event promotion: Rescue Party will organize musical events, freeform parties, theme parties, bar-b-ques, picnics, movie showings, and any other type of event that can be used to raise funds and maintain awareness for the recovery process. Our focus is local, working with local musicians, local venues, and local organizations to foster direct interactions between those who can help and those who need help.

Direct Community Action: Rescue Party is a growing community. Anyone who needs help or wants to help can join us. Rather than routing funds, materials and volunteers through a central authority we will put people directly in touch. MoveOn.org's Hurricane Housing effort is a great example of this model. We want to extend that model to the entire recovery process.

Software development: Recovery from Katrina's damage will be a complex process involving millions of people. Many of those people are not part of any formal large-scale organization. Families, friends and neighbors will come together to recover and rebuild their communities. Today we have technologies that can help people with that process. Rescue Party will develop software to help with these processes in the Internet Free Software tradition. Using the same model that created the Apache Web Server, the Linux Kernel and the Debian Project, we will connect those who have skills with those who have needs and create solutions with immediate application.

We need help from just about everyone. Please be patient with us and keep checking the website over the next few days. We are working to put initial infrastructure in place for development and coordination, and will be putting out a more formal call for assistance soon. If you have immediate suggestions or ideas you can forward them to contact at rescueparty.org.

Thank you for your attention. Recovery is possible. We can have our community back and have it as good as and even better than it was before.

Join the Party!

Rescue Party 501c3 paperwork filed

Rescue Party has filed its Texas state 501c3 paperwork. This will allow us up to 15 months to put the accounting and reporting processes in place to meet full non-profit requirements. We expect to meet that deadline well in advance of the actual time limit. All fund-raising activities and all disbursements will be documented online, down to the dollar. We are currently working with the Louisiana government to locate funding opportunities on the ground in local areas to eliminate redundant layers of administration.

First Rescue Party event at Double Wide in Dallas, TX raises more than $1,000.00.

With less than three days of preparation, seven bands in Dallas, TX raised more than $1,000.00. Local Dallas bands Shanghai 5, Slick 57, Donny Ray Ford, Sabateur, Nope, Nate Fowler's Elixir and the Falkon came together to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims.
